Wegmans tops Consumer Reports supermarket ratings

Wegmans has yet another feather in its cap. The Rochester-based chain again has been ranked at the top of the list of the best supermarkets around the country.

Consumer Reports, in a survey of 24,000 readers, says Wegmans is number one. Other chains in the top five include Trader Joe's and Publix. Wegmans ranked first in the Consumer Reports survey last year.

But there is more to this story. Wegmans can't celebrate the recognition publicly.

Coming up tonight on News10NBC, we're looking into why Wegmans is not allowed to tout the ranking in any of its advertising.

Wegmans says if it does, it faces a fine from the magazine.

NYS sales tax exemption on clothing in effect

Most counties, except for Wayne and eight others, have a local four-percent tax you still have to pay.

U.S. Basks, Rest of the Northern Hemisphere Shivers

The average March temperature in Rochester was 47.3 degrees.  This was a remarkable 13 degrees above average.

The average winter (December-January-February) temperature in Rochester was 32.4 degrees.  This placed the winter as the fifth warmest on record.  The warmest winter in Rochester history was in 1931-32 when the average temperature reached 34.5 degrees.  (The only noteworthy item to cheer if you are a winter weather fan was the above normal snowfall that was observed in February.)

Additionally, this past winter nationally also turned out to be the 5th warmest on record.

You thus might be surprised to learn that globally, this winter was the 11th coldest on record in the 34 year satellite record.

This is attributable to the fact that parts of Europe and Asia were breaking records for low temperatures and heavy snow, while we in the States were basking in the glow of a low winter sun.

NYS trout and salmon season opens today

New York state's trout and salmon season opens today, partially due to mild winter and early spring conditions.

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens says experts anticipate stream flows favorable to early season trout fishing, and fish should be more active than normal this spring.

The DEC is beginning to stock more than 301 lakes and pounds and roughly 3,000 miles of stream with approximately 2.4 million brook, brown and rainbow trout.

Officials are cautioning anglers venturing out into waterways affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, in areas like the Catskills, Central New York and the Adirondacks, as a number of streams and banks may look different compared to last year as a result of storm damage.
