Red Cross benefit 5K scheduled for June 8

This year’s Run for the Red, a benefit 5K for the American Red Cross, will be held on June 8 in front of the Wayne County Chapter in Newark.  

The race will begin at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 8 a.m. The top male and female finishers will receive $50 in cash prizes and a medal; additional place medals for the top finishers in each age group will also be given.

Lock 29 raises money for Palmyra fire victims

Money raised from a musical fundraiser Saturday for victims of the May 3 fire in downtown Palmyra was presented Monday.

Lock 29 owners Ethel Graham and John Graham presented checks to Steve Marsille of the Good Neighbor Fund in Palmyra. The benefit raised $1,500, and that $1,500 was matched by Lock 29 for a total of $3,000 for the fire victims who lost their homes and many possessions.

Those still wishing to contribute can send money to the Good Neighbor Fund through the Western Presbyterian Church, 101 E. Main St., Palmyra, 14522. Checks can be mailed there, or cash and checks can be dropped off at the American Legion on Cuyler Street in Palmyra.

In other fundraising news, a car wash hosted by Pal-Mac cheerleaders will be held at Breen’s Shop 'n Save at the corner of state routes 21 and 31 on Friday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Cash and any non-perishable food items are being accepted.

Wayne ARC leads the way in autism services

Wayne ARC and Roosevelt Children's Center discuss specialized services available to all ages.

According to the Center for Disease Control 1 out of 88 children in the United States has autism. In our nearly 50 years of service we have witnessed first- hand the staggering rise in diagnosis and have been inspired to develop programs and therapies to address the behaviors and learning styles of individuals of all ages that fall somewhere on the spectrum. Additional efforts have been focused on training and credentialing our staff so that they are fully prepared to lead these efforts equipped with a contemporary, evidence based foundation of knowledge.

At our Roosevelt Children's Center, which serves children ages birth through 5 years old, we have developed and implemented a comprehensive program to serve preschool children who are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The new 2013 Wayne County Visitor Guide has just been delivered and is ready to be mailed or picked up by you. The guide is an all inclusive brochure containing information on accommodations, outdoor recreation, restaurants, attractions, historical sites, charter boats, fishing and more.

The Wayne County Visitor Guide is produced by the Wayne County Office of Tourism. We have printed 70,000 guides to be distributed throughout the United States and Canada in response to our advertising campaign. The guides are also distributed at local and regional information centers, travel/trade shows, literature exchanges and Triple A Associations.

Lyons woman charged with obstructing governmental administration

A 39-year-old Lyons woman has been charged with obstructing governmental administration.

Sheriff’s deputies in Wayne County say they were assisting the Lyons Police Department in its investigation of a domestic incident involving Tessa Vankoevering. According to investigators, Vankoevering refused to follow orders given by a deputy.

Vankoevering was issued an appearance ticket and is due back in court at a later date.
 

Geneva Police looking for burglary suspect

Have you seen this man?

Geneva Police are looking for 36-year-old Jeffrey Smith. Investigators say Smith is wanted for third-degree burglary. According to police, Smith stole money from Captains Room on Exchange Street back in January.

News10NBC is told Smith is also wanted for questioning in a burglary at 1 Franklin Square in March.

Police say his last known address was on Townline Road in Geneva but he may be in Ontario, Seneca or Wayne Counties.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

Rochester woman arrested on bench warrants


A 26-year-old Rochester woman has been arrested on two outstanding warrants.

Sheriff’s deputies say Crystal Parker was stopped by Rochester Police for a traffic violation and was subsequently arrested and turned over to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say Parker failed to appear in two different Wayne County courts and as a result, bench warrants were issued.

Parker was arraigned and remanded to the Wayne County Jail in lieu of bail.
