Wayne County man charged with criminal contempt

A Town of Galen is man has been arrested for criminal contempt.

Sheriff’s deputies say Joseph Cole violated an order of protection by driving past the home of a protected party.

Cole was arraigned on the charges and released. He is due in court at a later date.
 

Sheriff's Deputies: Newark teen steals grandmother's car and causes crash in Palmyra

A Newark teen has been arrested and charged with stealing his grandmother's car and causing a crash in Palmyra.

Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies say Jeffrey Tyler, 16, of Newark, took his grandmother's car without permission and caused a two car crash at the intersection of Hogback Road and Port Gibson Road in Palmyra. The crash happened around 3:30p.m. on April 20.

Tyler was issued citations from the crash including failure to yield the right of way, failure to stop at a stop sign, no insurance and unlicensed operator.

On May 3, Tyler was subsequently arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.  He was issued an appearance ticket.

 

Newark Volunteer Fire Department receives federal grant for new equipment

One local fire department is receiving a grant for new equipment to improve safety.

The Newark Volunteer Fire Department will receive $144,282 to buy new breathing apparatuses for their firefighters.

“The funding will be used to upgrade our current air packs that are from 1997 up to the latest standard,” Newark Volunteer Firefighter David Smith said. “We will be purchasing approximately 30 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus packs that will greatly improve the safety and comfort for our firefighters.”

The grant is from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Sodus woman charged with DWI

A Sodus woman is facing drunk driving charges after sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of a domestic violence incident in the Town of Sodus.

Deputies say there were called to Dodd Hill Road around 7:25 a.m. Thursday and while en route to the address, they say they received word that one of the parties involved in the incident had left the home.

According to deputies, they were able to locate the vehicle and person who left the scene a short distance from the home. Investigators say the driver, 48-year-old Michele Swail, had consumed alcohol. She was additionally charged with refusing a chemical test.

Swail was arraigned and remanded to the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.
 

AT&T expands 4G network in Wayne County

AT&T expands 4G network in Wayne County

AT&T says the nation’s largest 4G network just got larger for customers in Wayne County.

The company has upgraded three cell sites to expand existing 4G coverage for area residents and businesses. AT&T says as a result of the expansion, customers can take advantage of 4G speeds along Route 31 between Palmyra and Newark in the Wide Waters area; along the Ontario County Border, in Clyde; on Routes 31 and 414 in southeastern Wayne County and Route 14 from Lyons to Sodus Point.

Sodus woman charged with DWI after crash

A 32-year-old Sodus woman is facing charges following a one-car property damage crash on Route 350 in the Town of Walworth.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Lisa Hendrikse on charged with DWI, operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08% or higher, unsafe lane change and operating a motor vehicle while using a cell phone.

Hendrikse was issued tickets and released. She is due in court at a later date.
