Sheriff's office offers Safe Boating Course

Summer is right around the corner and that mean boating season is on its way, too.

In preparation, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office will offer a New York State Safe Boating Course.

The course is required for anybody who wants to drive a personal water craft, like a Jet Ski or Wave Runner. It's also required for anybody between the ages of 10 and 17 in order to drive any water vessel, including boats.

The course will be offered May 11th from 8:30 am until 5 pm at Pal-Mac High School on Hyde Parkway in Palmyra. To register for this course, call 315-597-3409.

It will also be offered May 18th from 8:30 am until 5 pm at the Wayne County Fire Training Building on Nye Road in Lyons. You can register for that course by calling 315-946-5714.

Participants are asked to bring a pen and lunch to class with them.

32 local schools to perform at RBTL's Stars of Tomorrow

The Rochester Broadway Theatre League’s Stars of Tomorrow 15th Annual Recognition Ceremony, presented by Palmer’s Direct To You Market, Sponsored by McDonalds, will be held on Thursday  at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester. The Stars of Tomorrow is a program that celebrates high school musical theatre productions in the greater Rochester area in true Tony Award fashion.

Red Cross benefit 5K scheduled for June 8

This year’s Run for the Red, a benefit 5K for the American Red Cross, will be held on June 8 in front of the Wayne County Chapter in Newark.  

The race will begin at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 8 a.m. The top male and female finishers will receive $50 in cash prizes and a medal; additional place medals for the top finishers in each age group will also be given.

Marion man charged with DWI in Canandaigua

A 58-year-old Marion man is facing charges following a traffic stop in Canandaigua.

Police say they received a call for a sick or intoxicated driver, driving erratically. When they located the vehicle on Gibson Street, Canandaigua Police charged with the driver – Edward Leno – with driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired by drugs, reckless driving, moving from lane unsafely and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Leno was remanded to the Ontario County Jail pending arraignment.

East Palmyra Christian School to hold golf tournament

East Palmyra Christian School will hold a golf tournament in June.

The tournament will be Saturday June 22 at Newark Country Club. Registration begins at 8:15a.m., with a putting contest at 8:30a.m. and tee-off at 9:00a.m.

The entry fee is  $65.00 and includes: 18 hole green fees, cart, prizes, & catered lunch (pulled pork, salads, soft drinks). Payment is due by June 15.

Public Health welcomes TB clinician

Wayne County Public Health welcomed Dr.Gary Wahl, to the WCPH Tuberculosis (TB) Program.

Dr. Wahl is a Pulmonologist with the RGH Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Group. Wayne County Public Health is excited for this new partnership.

The mission of WCPH TB program is to provide surveillance,control and prevention of Tuberculosis in Wayne County. The program is staffed with a full time nurse, Veronica LaFave-Boughton.

TB clinics providing testing and lung clinics are held regularly at our Nye Rd, Lyons facility. Nursing visits, when necessary, can be made in the early morning, during daytime hours, or during the evening to accommodate our clients. Interpreters are available for individuals who need them to assist with interviews.

Pasta dinner fundraiser to benefit Honor Flight Rochester

The North Rose Wolcott Teacher’s Association is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Honor Flight Rochester on May 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the North Rose Wolcott High School.

The dinner includes spaghetti and meatballs, bread, salad, a drink and dessert. Presale tickets are $7 for adults ($9 at the door) and kids under 10 are $5. Take out is available

Last year, the North Rose Wolcott Teacher’s Association held a spaghetti dinner fundraiser and was able to raise approximately $2,000 for Honor Flight Rochester.
