Hospital holds "beam-signing" ceremonies for new ED |

Physicians, team members, board members and members of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital “extended family” were given the opportunity to get up close and personal with the new Emergency Department/Major Modernization Project on two separate occasions in the past two weeks. The hospital held special Beam Signing ceremonies to give “hospital family members and friends” the opportunity to sign one of the beams that will become part of the new ED’s structural foundation in the next couple of weeks.

“This project is very exciting for everyone involved with Newark-Wayne, especially team members and physicians who have seen the tremendous growth and all of the positive changes in the last few years,” said Mark Klyczek, president, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. “We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to make their mark on this new building and to become part of the history of the hospital,” he added.

The new endoscopy suite, a component of the Major Modernization Project, is on track to open this summer. This new state-of-the-art suite will include a separate admissions area and patient recovery cubicles for a more private, comfortable, and family-focused patient experience. The spacious 4,148-square foot suite area — more than twice the size of the previous suite — will allow for better access and workflow for the endoscopy team as well.

“This is an incredible project for our hospital and our community,” remarked Tim Maher, executive director of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Foundation. “This wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our team members and generosity of our friends in the community.”

The new emergency department is also on schedule and will open in the spring of 2013. It will be more than twice the size of the current ED and is designed to handle the growing number of patients — projected at more than 24,000 this year, more than twice the number the current ED was designed for). Other features will include: a fast track service for non-emergent patients; design features for improved throughput and decreased wait times; increased accessibility for ambulances; and an overall better environment for increased patient, family and team member/physician satisfaction.

The third phase of the project, construction of a Patient Access Center, will take place in the current ED’s space once the new ED is complete. It will re-open the main corridor of the hospital to DeMay Living Center and the Medical Office Building and will include: a public reception area and Central Registration, Pre-Admission Testing and the Lab Blood Draw Center.

The community members have responded positively to the projects and have pledged over $2.2 million to the project to date.
