An end of an era today.
Trombino’s Restaurant, overlooking the park in Lyons, will close at the end of the month. Current owner Paul Santelli and his brother Mike, now deceased, purchased the eatery in 1981.
“Everybody is devastated,” said Village Mayor Corrine Kleisle. “We loved the restaurant. People have patronized it for many, many years.”
For sale for seven years, the restaurant has become increasingly difficult to run alone, Santelli said.
Locally, people are hoping something will happen between now and the end of the month, that a buyer will surface and take it over, avoiding its closure.
Santelli said he has a “couple pokers in the fire” who would probably run it as a restaurant.
“Everyone is trying to get in their last meal, so to speak,” said Kleisle.
Scheduled closing night is the Lyons Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year banquet.
A lot of memories were made at Trombino’s.
Kleisle’s relationship with her husband started at the corner table by the fireplace.
“We have fond memories of that corner and still tend to gravitate to it,” she said.
No one feels worse about the closing, Santelli said, than he does.
Where life will take him from here, he doesn’t know.
“I haven’t figured that out now,” Santelli said.
