Eagle service project fills the shelves of the Ontario Food Pantry

The shelves of the Ontario Food Pantry were stocked with more than 400 new items last week, thanks to an Eagle service project.

Ian Stead, a Scout with Ontario Boy Scout Troop 127 and senior at Wayne Central School District, took on the project to meet his Eagle service project.

Stead coordinated efforts with the National Honor Society and Boy Scout Troop 127 to make people aware of the need for donations. He created drop sites at the high school and encouraged students to donate items.

The Food Pantry assists about 60 Ontario families each month and is available to any Ontario resident in need and works on a referral system. To apply for a referral or assistance, contact any one of the town's seven churches or Wayne Social Services.

Mike Barnard Auto Group in Newark is helping a selected charity raise money each month with an activity at the dealership.
 
“Our 2011 goal is to contribute $6,000 this year for local non-profits and charities,” said Jason Sgarzi, General Manager of Mike Barnard Auto Group.
 
Sgarzi became involved in charity work back home in Boston area.
 
“I’ve done multiple charitable events in Plymouth, MA., where I’m from,” he said. “We were a family business from 1920 until the early 2000’s. Obviously, we did a tremendous positive things over that time.
 
“I was the fourth generation. You learn how to give back to the community, and become pro-active where in the area you do business. I think it is a responsibility to give back, a responsibility that business people too often ignore.”
 
Sgarzi continued, “As an individual people can’t necessarily afford, or simply haven’t enough time to engage the community.

Ontario Red Kettle Challenge raises record $11,000

A record amount of money was raised during this year's Ontario Red Kettle Challenge.

More than $11,000.00 in donations was collected with more than 250 people participating The winner and results were announced last night at a reception attended by participants and town officials. Ontario Girl Scout Troop 377 was named the winner of the competition.

BSA Troop 127 started the challenge in 2007 to increase participating in the Salvation Army campaign. Before the competition was started, the Red Kettle donations totaled about $1,000. Since than, a new record has been set each season.

More than 27 community groups participated in the competition, ringing the bell for a total of 158.5 hours over the course of 30 days at the Tops Market on Furnace Road in Ontario. The winner of the challenge is determined based on the number of people participating and their spirit and enthusiasm.

Zumba instructors hold fundraiser for 3-year-old Marli

Some local Zumba instructorsare holding a fundraiser to help a little 3-year-old girl.

On Sunday, January 29th there will be a fundraiser for three-year-old Marli Gerber at the Palmyra Community Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Who is Marli?
Back in November, Marli was complaining that her stomach hurt. Her father, Shawn, was rubbing her stomach and found a hard mass. At the time, he thought she needed to go to the bathroom. The next day realizing it was something more, they took her to her pediatrician and he sent them to Strong where they admitted her.

After doing many tests, they came to the conclusion it was a Wilms Tumor and that she was going to need it removed. The surgery took place the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to have the tumor removed as well as her kidney, adrenal gland and lymph node and was in recovery for a week and a half before coming home.

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter was honored with the W. Burton Richardson Lifetime Achievement Award, along with 10 local human services workers who were recognized in other categories during the Seventh Annual Human Services Worker of the Year Awards Luncheon.

2nd Annual Palmyra Moose Riders Ridin for the Red

The Palmyra Moose Riders 1420 held its motorcycle run to support the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross on Saturday.

More than 200 people showed up to support the event, which raised more than $4,000 for local disaster relief.

The Dice Run stopped at the Yankee Clipper in Clifton Springs, Lake Bluff Campground in Wolcott, Bubba’s Road House in Sodus, Ray’s Bridge Pub in Palmyra, and returned to the Palmyra Moose Lodge for a BBQ dinner supplied by Stoney’s Pizzeria in Lyons. There was also a DJ, bike games and raffles

Red Cross assisting Wolcott family after house fire

The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross was is helping a Wolcott family after a fire destroyed their home. It happened on Woodruff Road around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Red Cross volunteers provided the family of five with emergency food and clothing.

“This has been a very busy summer season for fires” stated James Love, Executive Director of the Wayne County Chapter. “We are averaging a little over a fire a week in the community which is a lot during the summer months”.

Love also said that the busiest time of year for fires is during the months of November, December and January when people turn to alternative sources of heat.
