"Walk for Life" on May 18

The North Rose chapter of Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention will hold its third annual “Walk for Life” on Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Supporters will walk to raise awareness of suicide prevention and to honor loved ones lost to suicide.

There will be good and drink for sale, yellow ribbon bracelets, pins and other items for sale.

The walk will be held on the North Rose-Wolcott High School track. If it rains, it will be held inside the gym.

The walk fee is $10, $15 or $20. Larger donations will be accepted.

Red Cross benefit 5K scheduled for June 8

This year’s Run for the Red, a benefit 5K for the American Red Cross, will be held on June 8 in front of the Wayne County Chapter in Newark.  

The race will begin at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 8 a.m. The top male and female finishers will receive $50 in cash prizes and a medal; additional place medals for the top finishers in each age group will also be given.

Wayne County Schools take home numerous awards at RBTL's "Stars of Tomorrow" recognition ceremony

Rochester Broadway Theatre League's Stars of Tomorrow recently held its annual recognition ceremony that celebrates high school musical theatre productions in the greater Rochester area.

The Stars of Tomorrow made its debut in the greater Rochester area in 1999. Local high schools with fall and spring productions are invited to participate in the program. Schools are divided into four divisions based on school populations and judges are assigned specific divisions.  Areas of concentration are scored, and awards are given to schools or individuals with the highest scores within each category.

Christopher’s Challenge Hike for Life

 

Christopher’s Challenge will be hosting its 12th annual Hike for Life on Sunday, April 28th at Eastview Mall. The hike was started in memory of two brave men who lost their battles with cancer: Gene Martello, from Seneca Falls, and Tony Canali, from Canandaigua. Both men were dedicated supporters of Christopher’s Challenge and believed in the mission of getting more people typed to become potential bone marrow donors.

Local Zumba instructors get ready for 2nd annual Zumba for Autism event in Palmyra

April is Autism Awareness Month and two local Zumba instructors are gathering with some friends to help area families through AutismUp(formerly UNYFEAT).

They are holding their 2nd annual Zumba for Autism on Sunday April 28 at the Palmyra Community Center. The fun begins at 2:00p.m. with registration at 1:30p.m.

Besides Zumba, there will be a representative from AutismUp there as well as a bake sale, raffles and project table for kids.

The cost of the event is $10 for adults and children 13-years-old and up and $5 for children 5-12. Children 4 and under are free.

Event Sunday to celebrate 25 years of helping Fairport youth

In 1988, many school districts across the state of New York were given the task of created a community council for promoting healthy behavior among youth.

The Drug Free Schools and Community Act provided funding for districts along with written criteria for starting a functional partnership among schools, local law enforcement, government, and community groups.

While such groups were formed, few have lasted as long as the Fairport-Perinton Chemical Prevention Advisory Council (CPAC).

Debra Tandoi, who also works as the Asset Coordinator for the Fairport school district, says this is something Fairport takes great pride in.

“We followed the formula, and I think that’s the reason we’ve been able to sustain ourselves over the years,” said Tandoi.

The goal of CPAC is to educate youth about the dangers of substance abuse and promote healthy habits in the face of negative peer pressure.
