Annual Apple Tasting Tour kicks off in Wayne County on October 1

The 15th annual Apple Tasting Tour in Wayne County kicks off on October 1. Families and apple lovers are invited to come spend time outdoors this fall, enjoying the crisp autumn air, taking in the colors of the season, picking their favorite apples and discovering all the different orchards and apple-related businesses that make up this vibrant agricultural region.

The "Apple Tasting Tour Challenge" runs all October. While visiting any of the 14 participating farms and farm markets, people can get their "tour cards" stamped to enter to win one of four Gift Baskets. Cards are available at all the tour locations, online or by calling Wayne County Tourism at 800-527-6510. During "Tasting Weekend" (October 5-8) visitors can learn about the many varieties of apples and figure out which ones are their favorites by "taste testing" the different types at the markets on the Tour.

Annual Lumberjack Festival held at Macedon Center Fireman's Field

If you have a passion for the outdoors and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, then the annual community lumberjack festival is the place to be.

Organizers are celebrating the 30th year for the festival this weekend. Despite yesterday’s weather, the crowds are still coming out to enjoy everything it has to offer.

There is something for everyone, from competitions like log rolling and chopping, to rock climbing and making crafts.

News10NBC is told you just have to see it, to believe it.

Tony Porpora says, “Right after I joined the department, I was like ‘aw lumberjack’… I kind of made fun of it but then once you get here and you see it, it’s really unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It’s a lot of fun, it’s great for families, and it’s great for everyone.”

The festival is held at the Macedon Center Fireman's Field on Canandaigua Road.

Three event highlights

1 -- The food. The festival kitchen, run for years by George Hanushevsky of Irondequoit, serves up plates full of traditional, homemade Ukrainian foods such as varenyk (also called pyrohy or pierogies), a potato and cheese dumpling; holubets, stuffed cabbage rolls; kovbasa, Ukrainian sausage; kapusta, Ukrainian-style sauerkraut; and borshch, a beet soup. Prices range from $10 for a combination plate to $1 to $4.50 for single items.

2 -- The entertainment. The festival’s featured folk dancers from near and far are always a hit, as are music for dancing each evening, and performing groups like Melody Lane, Heavenstar, Mosaic, and more. Look for the high-flying dancers, including the Chaika Performing Ensemble from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, at 3 and 6 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday.

Hill Cumorah Pageant: 75 years of change

One hill, two dramas and 350 missionaries and the now historic Hill Cumorah Pageant was born, but the pageant’s roots go much deeper than that.

In 1917 missionaries from the Church of Latter-Day Saints came together at the Smith Farm in Palmyra for a convention. The annual meeting was a reunion of sorts and attendees began planning picnics, athletic events and small skits to celebrate this gathering of friends. The event became known as the Cumorah Conference, which convened to coincide with the Pioneer Day celebration on July 24 marking Brigham Young’s arrival at the Salt Lake Valley in 1847.
