The Palmyra-Macedon varsity wrestling team is beginning to reap some of the benefits of its hard work, perseverance and a lot of sweat equity formed during recent off-season training.
After a successful week at the Oklahoma Gold Wrestling Camp at SUNY Brockport in late June, the Red Raiders earned first place in the Blue Bracket during the first of two weekend tournaments celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Thousand Islands Summer Duals in Clayton, NY over the weekend of July 29-31. The second tournament ran this past weekend, Aug. 5-7. Over 70 teams from throughout the Northeast competed in the anniversary tournament during the two weekends.
Pal-Mac was one of a handful of high school wrestling teams competing against a larger number of all-star wrestling clubs during the weekend tournament. In their first two matches on Saturday, the young Raider team endured tough losses to all-star clubs from Lewis County (Black team) and Canasota.
In their third match, the Red Raiders wrestled Newark Valley (another all-star team) in a real nail-biter that went right down to the final bout, with the Raiders coming up on the short end of a 32-31 score.
In their fourth and final match of the day, the Raiders got their first taste of victory, chalking up a 54-15 win over the Clarence Red Devils, a high school team from Section VI's ECIC.
