It’s ‘Barrie’s Way’ at Marion — again

It’s ‘Barrie’s Way’ at Marion — again

Folks will be reminded of a beloved member of the Marion school community every time they drive into the parking lot at the Junior-Senior High School.

That’s where they’ll see the sign for Barrie Fleegel Way, dedicated to the memory of the district’s longtime superintendent, who spent his entire educational career at Marion.

Members of the Marion community, as well as Mr. Fleegel’s friends and family, came together on a chilly Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago to celebrate his life by dedicating the driveway into the school in his memory. Bus drivers, board members, former students, faculty and family members witnessed the unveiling of Barrie Fleegel Way.

One of Mr. Fleegel’s daughters said it was deserved honor, considering her father’s personality.

It was a real nail biter!

And in the end of the fast-paced, action-packed basketball game, it was the teachers who emerged victorious.

They won the “Hoops for the Hungry” benefit game sponsored by the Newark High School Honor Society March 1 at NHS.

But the biggest winner was the Newark Food Closet.

The Honor Society presented it with a $450 check and several dozen cans of food after the event.

Money raised came from proceeds from a raffle, bake sale, admission to the game and teachers who participated each giving $5 to the cause.

The basketball game pitted members of the National Honor Society against some NHS and Newark Middle School teachers as well as NHS Assistant Principal Nick Ganster.

Students learn about careers for their future

Students learn about careers for their future

After the fourth annual Career Day for seventh graders at Newark Middle School February 4, students were surveyed about things they liked, disliked, learned something new about or wanted to know more about.

Here’s a sampling of things they gleaned from attending four career presentations.

• You decide what career you want and opening your own business is possible for anyone.

• Some jobs don’t require a college degree.

• That you have to work hard and be dedicated to reach your career goal.

• You shouldn’t let anything stop you from doing what you really want to do.

•  A good knowledge of math and science are important in many careers, including being an architect.

• That what you study in school prepares you for the career you want.

• That there are nursing jobs that don’t require you to deal with blood.

• That there are many jobs in the criminal justice field.
