Scholar Athlete of the Week 4/3: Williamson's Carly Bean

Williamson High School's Carly Bean does it all. Her 99 average puts her third in her class. Older successful siblings and a love for math have her leaning towards a career in engineering. “I think it's the problem solving. I'm taking special digital electronics which I like a lot. It has to do with electrical engineering. I really enjoy that like solving problems and making things work.”

Sports also works for Carly. “My older brothers would play in the back yard. We had a goal my dad made for us out of pipes and stuff we played since I was little.”

Carly picked up soccer first, then basketball and by fifth grade, softball. “When I was a freshman I played shortstop, as a sophomore I was in center field then I started catching I like it and we needed a catcher. I liked it enough, I stayed there.”

Carly is captain for all three of her teams and has made all-county for all three. Her greatest achievement -- winning sectionals her sophomore year in soccer.

Team depth, versatility key Pal-Mac swim team's season

Team depth, versatility key Pal-Mac swim team's season

Coming into this season, Palmyra-Macedon boys swimming and diving head coach Jason Stevens did not have high team expectations, particularly after graduating seven seniors from last year’s squad.

“The expectation at the beginning of the year was that we were going to focus more on ourselves, individual goals versus what we’re going to do in comparison to other teams,” Stevens said.

Tri-captain Quinton Jones added, “We lost seven seniors who were contributors to the team, and that was big.

“It was like this year was going to be a recovery period, but we started to notice as the season went on that we were getting better and better as a team. We just had a lot of depth.”
Tri-captain Clem York said, “Everyone was improving at the same rate, which I think helped a lot.”

The team’s achievements of winning the regular season and league championships, however, surpassed everyone’s expectations.

Wayne girls have fun in senior basketball game

It was a game that was played with a basketball and for most of the forty minutes it was used for the purpose of which it was designed. But at other moments it was used as a football, soccer ball and even a volleyball.

But the most important role it played here Wednesday was to bring 19 seniors from the Wayne County girls basketball league together for one final game.

The game wasn’t really about who won or lost, it was about friendship, fun and smiles. For some of the girls from Clyde-Savannah, North Rose-Wolcott, Lyons, Sodus, Williamson, Gananda and East Rochester it might have been the last game of organized basketball they ever played.
