Lyons girls basketball rallies past HAC on Lester's late bucket

Lyons girls basketball rallies past HAC on Lester's late bucket

In what might very well be the best comeback in Section 5 girls basketball this season, the No. 2 Lyons Lions overcame a 17-point deficit with a minute, 54 seconds left in the third quarter to claw their way back to a nail-biting, bleacher-rocking 58-57 victory over No. 3 Harley-Allendale-Columbia. Lyons junior Hannah Lester hit a 5-foot bank shot just outside the paint on the right side with 6.1 left on the clock that proved to be the game winner.

Lions sophomore guard Ja’teria Wells fueled the Lions (18-2) with 10 first-quarter points en route to her career high 23 on the night. With 1:22 left in the first quarter Lyons held on to a 15-9 lead, but HAC (18-3) managed to cut the lead to three points as Kayli O’Keefe dropped in the first of her four 3-pointers on the night. The Lyons turned the ball over and freshman Abby O’Keefe drove the lane, bringing the Wolves within one to end the first frame.

Beating the odds

Sectional titles in high school football were handed out at Sahlen's Stadium and now our best head to the state quarterfinals.

The East Rochester/Gananda Football Team clinched their first sectional title in 27 years, last week defeating Livonia. They are the underdogs heading into this weekend's state quarterfinals. That's nothing new for the team's head coach who says every play counts and so does every vote.

The jury is still out on whether Dennis Greco and his Bombers can beat  powerhouse Alden of Section VI on Saturday. The jury is also still out on whether Greco will win his race for town justice in East Rochester against Dave Bonacci. Only five votes separate the two in a race that's still undecided. But Greco has already scored an important victory in the court of public opinion by bringing a title back to the home of the champions for the first time in 27 years.
