Route 31 culvert over Trout Run Creek in Lyons to be replaced

Work will begin soon to replace the culvert that carries Route 31 over Trout Run Creek in the town of Lyons.

The bridge will be closed beginning Monday March 25 and will be closed for about a month. The $798,000 project includes replacement of the nearly 100-year-old culvert, located to the west of the village, which has been showing signs of deterioration.

A detour will be posed directing drivers to use Routes 88, 96 and 14.

The road is expected to reopen by late April.

For those looking to cross the Erie Canal via Division Street in Palmyra, things just got a little trickier.

The Division Street Bridge — which crosses the canal — was closed by the state Department of Transportation June 29.

According to DOT spokesperson Lori Maher, the bridge was closed “due to advanced deterioration of the structural steel.” She added that there is no scheduled date for the bridge to reopen.

“Sure, it’s an inconvenience,” said Palmyra Mayor Vicky Daly. “If you live on Division Street, you’re going to have find an alternate route.”

Daly noted that there are still other options.

However, Daly said that people aiming to get to Division Street businesses could be particularly inconvenienced.
